Camping was supposed to be one of those dowdy pastimes that became perversely fashionable for a moment, only to become just as unfashionable again once everybody tried it and found out what it actually entailed. But camping hasn't gone away; it's more popular than ever. Thanks to the recession, camping and caravan trips last year were up 27% on the previous year. Sales of tents and other equipment continue to climb. Both the high and low end of the market have expanded rapidly. "Glamping" â?? where you sleep in a luxuriously appointed tent someone elso has put up for you â?? is seen as an acceptable, if not preferable alternative to staying in a B&B, but you can also get a tent in Tesco for a tenner. Camping is suddenly for everybody.
A couple of months earlier I'd happened to read an article about the creative writing course at the University of East Anglia, which had made a name for itself by producing writers such as Ian McEwan, Kazuo Ishiguro and Rose Tremain. The photographs accompanying the article showed a group of intensely pensive people reclining in luxuriously upholstered armchairs. Presumably they were contemplating the complexities of contemporary literature. It looked kind of fun. I already had a handful of ideas for short stories â?? ideas which had proved too unwieldy for the lyrics of a song, but it was several days after the bombshell about the band's imminent break-up before I remembered that article. Suddenly the clouds parted and my future was revealed to me. I would trade the ripped jeans and sweaty T-shirt of the alternative music scene for the more dignified tweeds of the world of publishing.
